¡Gran día ha sido hoy con todas las cosas que me llegaron por correo! Esta vez son dos libros que compré la noche de Navidad. Ambos vienen de un temática similar, y de hecho mi interés por ellos sale de una misma fuente: The Wire. Para quienes no la conozcan, The Wire es la mejor serie policial que jamás se haya hecho. Ya se vendrán entradas al respecto, pero mientras volvamos a los libros.

Por un lado está Homicide: a Year on the Killing Streets, escrito por el mismo creadorde The Wire. El libro relata un año entero de investigaciones del Departamento de Homicidios de la Policía de Baltimore. Para quienes hayan visto The Wire o disfruten de relatos policiales, sobre todo de casos reales, como los de David Simon, este libro debería ser una recomendación. Todavía no lo leí, así que me reservo la última palabra, pero desde ya la sinópsis promete:

This 1992 Edgar Award winner for best fact crime is nothing short of a classic. David Simon, a police reporter for the Baltimore Sun, spent the year 1988 with three homicide squads, accompanying them through all the grim and grisly moments of their work–from first telephone call to final piece of paperwork. Por otro lado viene Grace After Midnight: A Memoir que es una autobiografía de Felicia Pearson, actriz encargada de darle vida a Snoop en The Wire. Haber comprado este libro sin duda me sorprende, dos razones principalmente: primero, Snoop me cae bastante mal en la serie, es un personaje que encuentro demasiado chocante, y ni me hubiera imaginado que de alguna forma lo iba a seguir con gusto, menos con un libro del a actriz. Segundo, Felicia Pearson no está lejos de SER Snoop en la vida real. Si bien Felicia no es la asesina que interpreta en la serie, si tuvo una vida llena de drogas, violencia familiar, abandonos, maltratos, hasta un asesinato. Así que sin duda esto va a ser un excelente complemento para seguir dándole vida a The Whire y toda su historia.

While Felicia Pearson is a brilliant actor in a truly chilling role, what’s most remarkable about ‘Snoop’ is what she has overcome in real life. Born a three-pound, cross-eyed crack baby in East Baltimore and raised in a foster home, Snoop proved she was as tough as the streets. Showing an early aptitude for drug slinging and violence, she thrived as a baby gangsta until she landed in Jessup State Penitentiary after killing a woman in self-defence. There she rebelled violently against the system and it would take the news of the murder of her childhood mentor, a local drug-dealer called Uncle Loney, for her to decide to turn her life around. Then, after being discovered in a nightclub by one of The Wire’s cast members and recruited to the show, fiction began tio mirror life as ’snoop, drawing on the tribulations of her past, created one of television’s most frightening and intriguing villains.

Mención aparte para lo loco de estar comprando en Amazon UK. Claro, por estar acá mi Amazon local para compras en inglés es naturalmente el del Reino Unido y ya olvidado queda el yankee, al menos en una gran medida, porque en Amazon UK se consigue prácticamente lo mismo. También es raro estar viendo los precios en libras esterlinas, que por suerte no resulta tan caro como me imaginé al principio. Los envíos, por otro lado, tampoco son caros y llegan rápido, así que golazo al ángulo. En fin, me voy a leer.
